It includes visiting a wild dog conservation project; game viewing in a game concession area adjacent to Zimbabwe's famous Hwange National Park; nature drives and walks with the rhinos at Matobo National Park; wandering the Khami Ruins and drifting along the Chobe River while watching the sunset and prolific wildlife.
On the first day of this tour, we leave Victoria Falls and make our way to Hwange National Park. Covering an area of over 14,000 sq km Hwange is home to and famous for its populations of Elephant. After settling in for our first night, we game drive in a concession area adjacent to the National Park in search of the nocturnal wildlife of the area, including the ever-elusive leopard.
Hwange contains over 100 mammals and is home of the big 5leopard, lion, elephant, rhino and buffalo. The park is also known for its giraffe, cheetah, gemsbok, hyena and for the Wild Painted Dogs. Today we use open safari vehicle in the park to enhance our game viewing experience for a morning and afternoon drive.
We head south out of Hwange to Zimbabwes second city, Bulawayo. Just outside of the city we visit the Khami Ruins, the capital of the Kalanga Kingdom of Butwa of the Torwa dynasty. It is now a national monument and became a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Today we enter Matobo National Park which forms the core of the Matobo or Matopos Hills. These hills were formed over 2 billion years ago with granite being forced to the surface, this has eroded to produce smooth circular boulders. Mzilikazi, founder of the Ndebele nation, gave the area its name, meaning Bald Heads. Home to the largest concentration of Black and White Rhino in Africa, local guides will lead us on foot through the thickets of grass and wooded valleys in search of these majestic creatures.
Leaving Bulawayo we make our way across the border into Botswana and to the Elephant Sands Lodge. We normally arrive sometime in the early/mid-afternoon and have the rest of the day at leisure. Elephant Sands offers a watering hole in the middle of the camp and bar area where wildlife roams freely. Keep your eyes peeled for the resident elephants coming in for a drink. In the dry months, this waterhole can be home to over 50 elephants at a time.
Today we make our way to the town Kasane in northern Botswana. This is where we get to Chobe National Park and take a Fish Eagle cruise on the Chobe river a wonderful opportunity to view hippo and perhaps elephant or buffalo coming to the river to bathe while we float by in the late afternoon sunshine.
On our final day, we head back into the Chobe National Park in search of all the wildlife we may have missed the day before on an open vehicle game drive. After our time in the park we cross the border back into Zimbabwe and Victoria Falls.
